The development of the (PWD) known as Sigalarm first started in 1952 by Daniel Winters of Wintronics, Inc. Located in Hawthorn, CA
Patents were issued in 1957.
On February 28th, 1961, patent rights were purchased by CPM. CPM was formed for the explicit purpose to manufacture and distribute Sigalarm.
On February 7th, 1965, a patent number was granted to CPM and a contract for 20 units was awarded to Montek, Inc., located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Richard M. Jepperson, an engineer for Montek, Inc, later became an independent contractor who built Sigalarm units for CPM.
In 1969, CPM sold the patent rights to Bower Industries, located in Orange, CA. Bower Industries manufactured and distributed Sigalarm.
On June 1st, 1979 when rights were sold to Frank Thomas. Frank Thomas moved from Irvine, CA to Oregon where he continued operations until 1993.
In 1993 Frank Thomas sold all rights to Frank Wood located in Cocoa Beach, Fl.
On September 10th, 1999, Frank Wood sold rights to Lance and Kim Burney located in Sanford, Fl.
Anytime the system is turned on, whether activated at engine start up (wired through the ignition) or by the power switch on the front of the control panel, it will automatically be set at its most sensitive setting. At this setting, the system can sense as little as 110 volts AC, warning the operator (and crew) that he is in the vicinity of a high-voltage power line. The operator need not set or adjust the system for it to operate in this early warning mode — it occurs automatically!
As a Proximity Alarm Once the operator has been alerted to the presence of an energized power line in the vicinity of his work area, he may choose to stay far away. If the job assignment calls for working in close proximity to the power line — please, no closer than 20 feet — the system can be set to alarm any time the boom comes within the preset distance. The entire length of the SIGALARM sensor antenna continuously receives (detects) the signal (electrostatic field) produced by all energized power lines. This signal is amplified by the electronics on the main control unit. “Course” and “Fine” controls allow the operator to set the alarm circuits to “go off” at a predetermined distance from the power lines, producing both visual and audio warnings. The repetition rate of both the visual and audible alarms increases as the boom or extension moves closer to the “hot” power line. SIGALARM continues to warn until the boom is withdrawn from the danger zone.

Overhead high voltage power line contact is a known problem, where the potential for loss of life and property is enormous. Few people realize the difficulty in correctly judging the distance between overhead power lines and booms; due to depth perception issues. Sigalarm’s proximity alarms are designed to electronically back up a trained operator who might not realize how close he or she has gotten to an overhead high voltage power line. Generally it is the employers responsibility to determine safe minimum distance. Our products with proper installation, training, and operation can be successfully incorporated using the E-field to help avoid contact. Additionally our products have the unique ability to auto shutdown and stop movement of the boom. Sigalarm products provide the added protection required in most normal equipment operations.
Thousands of Sigalarm systems have been sold worldwide in numerous industries; with some units documented in the field for up to 20 years.
